Who is emergency care for?
Emergency home care is for anyone in a crisis who urgently needs care and support in order to live comfortably at home. There are many different circumstances and a variety of health conditions that may lead to this need. The most common situations are:
- An unexpected fall or injury
- The primary carer needs to take a break
- A faster-than-expected discharge from the hospital
- A family crisis
- A spouse or loved one who is usually the primary carer has fallen ill
- Your current care provider has let you down
- Emergency palliative care for someone with a terminal illness who wishes to return home
- A sudden illness that requires care and support
- Sudden deterioration of an existing health condition, such as dementia or Parkinson’s
- Postoperative care to assist with recovery
Depending on your situation and care needs we offer a range of flexible care options that can be put in place quickly and effectively. We know that circumstances can change quickly, and so can the care we provide to you.
Some of the care options we offer include:
Respite care is temporary care that typically covers loved ones, relatives, or professional care assistants that require time away from their clients.
Postoperative care is usually short-term and focused on supporting the individual in recovery from a surgical procedure.
For visiting care, the minimum duration of a visit is 30 minutes, depending on the level of assistance you require, this could be one visit per week to multiple visits per day.
Live-in care is where a professional carer lives with you in your home to provide full-time care and support whenever it is needed.
Overnight care is for those that live with a complex condition, overnight home care allows people to receive the support they need during the night whilst remaining safe and cared for in their own homes.
24-hour care is round-the-clock, day and night care. This usually involves 2 or more caregivers rotating shifts to ensure someone is always awake and available to help at any time.
Complex care is condition-led care for complex health conditions such as dementia care, Multiple Sclerosis care, and Parkinson’s care.
Palliative care is compassionate and dignified end-of-life care in the comfort of your own home.

How to prepare for an emergency
In some circumstances, it is possible to prepare for emergencies before they happen. This may be the case if a loved one has a complex health condition and is cared for by family members, for example. If the primary carer falls sick or is called away expectantly, emergency care will need to be put in place.
It’s good to plan for these types of situations. When we are faced with emergencies it can be difficult to think clearly or have time to collaborate with family to find solutions, especially when emotions are heightened. Preparing an emergency plan can save a lot of time and worry.
An emergency care plan should include:
- Contact details of a local care provider who you have already researched
- Decide which friend or family member can be called on to stay with the person needing care until it is implemented. Having a backup person can also be helpful and include their contact details in the plan
- Make sure important documents are readily available, such as the person’s ID and full address details along with any information about any existing health conditions/medications
- Make sure several friends or family have access to the emergency care plan and include the contact details of these people in the plan
“Trinity helped us through a fast-changing, challenging, and unpredictable medical situation with an elderly family member – and the service was excellent. Management was friendly, reactive, and flexible, advocating for us to obtain other NHS services and referrals. Big thanks to you all.”

How to avoid emergencies
Some emergencies are avoidable, especially if we consider the risks that our elderly loved ones may be exposed to. For example, trips and falls are extremely common and can be very serious in elderly people.
According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence 30% of people over 65 and 50% of people older than 80 fall at least once a year. One in ten (10%) falls result in hospital visits for people aged 75-79, and for people over 80 one in five (20%) will be admitted to hospital as the result of a fall. Hip fractures are also the most common reason older people need emergency anaesthesia and surgery, and the most common cause of accidental death.
Most of these accidents can be avoided if the right provisions are put in place. Early home care providers can significantly reduce the chances of an elderly person having accidents in the home. Professional home carers, such as those at Trinity Homecare, are trained in how to reduce trip and fall hazards in the home, as well as being able to give assistance with mobility to move around safely, remove clutter, and identify where home aids may be useful.
Many older people fear that home care will take away their cherished independence, but on the contrary, it enables independence by supporting the person to remain living comfortably and safely at home, reducing the risk of accidents and increasing their overall well-being and quality of life.
