Arranging live-in care for the first time can feel like a significant decision, particularly when you are unsure what support is needed, how quickly care can begin or what questions to ask a provider.
The process usually starts with an initial conversation, followed by a care assessment, a personalised care plan and the careful selection of a suitable carer. This guide explains each step and helps you prepare for conversations with prospective care providers.
What should you consider before arranging live-in care?
Before contacting a care provider, it can help to think about the support that would make everyday life safer and more comfortable. Consider which tasks are becoming difficult, whether help is needed at night, any health conditions that require specialist expertise, and the person’s routines, interests and preferences.
You do not need to have every detail decided. A professional care assessment should help establish the right level of support.
Questions to ask a live-in care provider
When comparing providers, focus on the questions that reveal how the service will work in practice:
- Is the service fully managed and regulated by the Care Quality Commission?
- Who employs, trains and supervises the carers?
- How will the carer be matched to the person’s needs and personality?
- What support is included, particularly during the night?
- Who provides cover during breaks, holidays or sickness?
- How often will the care plan be reviewed?
- What is the total weekly cost, and are there any additional charges?
- What notice is required to change or end the arrangement?

Step 2 – Talk to our experts
During this conversation, we will collect information about the person needing care and discuss their individual needs and requirements. At this time, we can also provide you with an approximate weekly cost based on the information you provide and explain how the process works in detail. We will never surprise you with hidden costs.
Step 3 – The care needs assessment
When you are ready to proceed, our expert care team will come to your home to carry out a free care needs assessment. As a fully managed home care provider, we are regulated by the CQC and approved to carry out at-home care needs assessments, unlike introductory care agencies, which are not regulated.
During the visit, we will explore in depth what help you require, how care may be delivered and give advice and suggestions about home aids or other equipment that can assist you to live comfortably at home. We also welcome input from family and existing carers, and we work closely with any healthcare professionals involved in your care to deliver holistic care personalised to your needs and wishes.
Step 4 – A personalised care plan
We create an individualised Care Plan tailored specifically to you. This plan takes into account your needs, routine, personality, social preferences, medical needs, and favourite activities, along with detailed guidance on the care you will receive to ensure standards of care are always adhered to.
Step 5 – Finding the right live-in carer
We want both you and your carer to be happy together for as long as you want their help. Using the information we have gathered about you, we carefully match you with the most suitable carer through our exclusive MatchCare programme.
Step 6 – Choose a suitable starting date
Once you are happy with your care plan and choice of carer, we will arrange a suitable starting date. We will follow up with you to make sure that you are happy with your home care. If there are any issues or doubts, we will work to resolve them immediately so that you can enjoy the peace of mind and comfort that live-in care offers.
What kinds of home care are available?
At Trinity Homecare, we have been providing outstanding home care throughout England for 30 years. Our wide range of home care services offers flexibility and personalised care, so you get exactly the care you need.
Our home care can be broken down into the following types of service:
- Visiting care is when a carer visits you in your home on agreed days and times. This can be from as little as 1 hour a week and up to several visits per day, depending on your needs
- Live-in care describes round-the-clock support delivered by a carer who comes to live in your home, so they’re on hand to provide help whenever it’s needed.
- 24-hour care or overnight care. 24-hour care is helpful for people with complex health needs who need support day and night, such as in the case of advanced-stage dementia. Overnight care can be used on its own to cover times when family caregivers need rest or to support clients who are anxious, restless, or agitated at night.
Through our experienced and highly trained carers, we can offer support for complex health needs, such as care for motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s, or cancer. No matter what type of care you choose, our services are totally flexible and easily adapted, so as your needs change, so does the care you receive.
